Merdeka Day
Step back in time to 1956 when the land we now know as Malaysia was called the Federation of Malaya. A passionate quest for freedom led by a determined delegation from United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malayan Chinese Association (MCA), Malayan Indian Congress (MIC), and Malay Rulers, spearheaded by the visionary Chief Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. Together, they embarked on a historic journey to negotiate independence with the British Colonial Office in London.
Their relentless efforts bore fruit, and on that momentous day of 31st August 1957 at 9:30 am, the heart of the nation beat as one. The stirring words of Tunku Abdul Rahman echoed through the newly constructed Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, as he proudly read the Proclamation of Independence. This pivotal event marked the birth of Malaysia as we know it today.
Before Malaysia came to be, the Federation of Malaya united 11 states on the peninsula, including the nine Malay states of Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, and Terengganu, as well as the two British Straits Settlements of Penang and Melaka.
Since that historic day, every 31st of August, we celebrate Hari Merdeka, the day that symbolizes the unwavering spirit and resilience of our people. It’s a time to reflect on the sacrifices made, the progress achieved, and the dreams that continue to drive us forward as a nation.
